This little female woodpecker was lured in by the aroma of bacon! Bacon is a once-in-awhile indulgence. We had overnight company and it seemed like a good idea to feed them breakfast;hoping that makes them want to come visit again! Bacon makes everything better, doesn’t it?
Little birds tweet to each other, “Don’t bother hunting for stray seeds today. They put bacon-flavored goop in the rhubarb leaf feeder at the RedBarn. The old folks don’t have cats and that black and white dog is worthless at catching birds. Come on over!” They do seem to have a network for passing information when food appears.
There are many ingredients you can put into the coveted ‘bird cakes’. Here are the ones that went in today: chopped old bread, two chopped apples, a few chopped peanuts, a blob of peanut butter and a few tablespoons of the grease drained off the morning bacon. In the past I have filled a muffin tin and popped it into the freezer. Today I simply pressed a bunch together and made a little patty of goop to set out into the feeder. They said they liked it!
